Konstantin Vsevolodovich

Born May 18, 1186, in Vladimir; died there Feb. 2, 1219. Grand prince of Vladimir in 1216–19; eldest son of Vsevolod BoPshoe Gnezdo.

From 1206 to 1207, Konstantin was a prince in Novgorod, after which he acquired Rostov, Yaroslavl, and Uglich. Vsevolod’s division of his principality among his sons in 1211 gave rise to prolonged conflict between them. Contrary to tradition, Konstantin was given Rostov and his brother lurii, Vladimir. During the reign of Konstantin there was a great deal of construction in Rostov and Yaroslavl, and the separate episcopacy of Rostov was created (1214). In his struggle against lurii for control of the grand principality, Konstantin supported the Novgorod prince Mstislav Mstislavich Udalyi. At the battle of Lipitsa in 1216, lurii and laroslav Vsevolodovich were routed, and Konstantin Vsevolodovich became grand prince of Vladimir. After his death, the grand prince’s throne was again occupied by lurii.
