NesokiaNesokiaa genus of rodents of the family Muridae. The genus has a single species, the short-tailed bandicoot rat (N. indica). The rodent, which reaches 22 cm in length, resembles a rat. The cheek teeth consist of two or three fused vertical plates. The short-tailed bandicoot rat inhabits the floodplains and meadows of river valleys from North Africa (mouth of the Nile), Asia Minor, and Southwest Asia to Pakistan and northern India. In the USSR it is encountered in southern Middle Asia. Short-tailed bandicoot rats live in colonies and lead a semisubterranean life. In the south they reproduce year-round; there are three to five young in a litter. The rodents damage irrigated crops and destroy adobe structures and the walls of irrigation canals. Nesokia
