Konrad Schramm

Schramm, Konrad

Born Aug. 21, 1822, in Krefeld; died Jan. 15, 1858, in St. Helier, Jersey, Great Britain. Figure in the German and international working-class movement.

During the Revolution of 1848–49 in Germany, Schramm helped with the publication of democratic newspapers. Arrested in May 1849, he escaped from prison in September and emigrated to Great Britain. In London he became friends with K. Marx and F. Engels. Schramm joined the Communist League and became a member of its Central Committee; he was one of the editors of the league’s journal, Neue Rheinische Zeitung: Politischeoekonomische Revue. After the split of the Communist League in the autumn of 1850, he supported the line of Marx and Engels. From 1852 to 1857, Schramm lived in the USA.
