Size: 1,647 acres.
Established: Authorized as Monocacy National Military Park on June 21, 1934. Law required land purchase by private funds. Federal purchase authorized and redesignated on October 21, 1976.
Location:In Frederick, Maryland; accessible from the north, east, and west via I-70, Exit 54 (Market Street), and from the south, via I-270, Exit 26 (Urbana).
Facilities:Visitor center (é), museum/exhibit.
Activities:Auto touring, hiking, bicycling, cross-country skiing, interpretive programs.
Special Features:In a battle here on July 9, 1864, Confederate General Jubal A. Early defeated Union forces commanded by Major General Lew Wallace. Wallace's troops delayed Early's advance on Washington, DC, however, enabling Union forces to marshal a successful defense of the capital.
