October Armed Uprising in Petrograd

 

an uprising on Oct. 24–25 (Nov. 6–7), 1917, of workers, revolutionary soldiers of the garrison, and sailors of the Baltic Fleet under the leadership of the Bolshevik Party headed by V. I. Lenin.

A classic example of a victorious proletarian armed uprising, the October Uprising led to the overthrow of the bourgeois Provisional Government and to the establishment of the power of the soviets of workers’, soldiers’, and peasants’ deputies. The uprising was the decisive action of the October Revolution of 1917 and presaged the triumphant march of Soviet power throughout Russia.
