One of the 20 to 30 glands that occupy each eyelid, lying parallel to each other and perpendicular to the lid edge and opening on to the lid margin. The meibomian glands secrete an oily fluid that prevents adhesion between the lids and forms an outer layer on the tear film over the cornea and conjunctiva so as to retard drying.
