Kolwezi

(kōlwĕz`ē), city (1984 pop. 416,122), Haut-Katanga prov., SE Congo (Kinshasa). It is a center for copper and cobalt mining. There are copper-ore concentration plants, a zinc refinery, and a brewery. Rebels attacked the city in 1978, flooding the mines.

a city in Shaba Province of the Republic of Zaïre. Population, 45,200 (1960). Station on the railroad leading to the port of Lobito in Angola. Kolwezi is the center of the western group of mines (Kamoto, Musonoi) of the copperbelt. The city has a zinc-electrolytic plant and paint and varnish enterprises. It also has a food-processing industry. A copper and cobalt electrolysis plant is located nearby.
