Kolvitsa
Kolvitsa
a lake in Murmansk Oblast, RSFSR. Area, 121 sq km. Lake Kolvitsa is located in the southwestern part of Kola Peninsula at an elevation of 61 m. The shores, particularly in the northwest, are jagged. The western shores are steep; the eastern and southern, low-lying. The average depth of the lake is 12 m (maximum depth, 20 m). It is fed primarily by snow. The water level in Lake Kolvitsa is highest in June and lowest in February; its range of variation is 180 cm. The lake freezes in October or November and thaws in May or early June. The Kolvitsa River rises in the lake; the river’s flow is regulated at its source by a dam in order to float timber.
