Kolo a folk dance similar to the Russian khorovod. It is prevalent among the people inhabiting the Balkan Peninsula and regions to the north (among the Bulgarians it is known as the khoro; among the Rumanian and Moldavian peoples, the hçrâ and syrba). The dance appears among Ukrainians and Poles. The kolo is performed in a chain or in a closed or open circle. It is accompanied by folk instruments and, sometimes, singing. The music is distinguished by changes of rhythm. Some kolos are performed at a fast tempo; others, at a slow tempo. |
