a city, center of Kola Raion, Murmansk Oblast, RSFSR. Located at the influx of the Kola and Tuloma rivers into the Kola Gulf of the Barents Sea. Railroad station 12 km south of Murmansk. Kola has a furniture factory and a macaroni factory.

The city was first mentioned in 1264 as a settlement; in 1550 it was made a stockaded town. Between 1589 and 1591 the Swedes launched a number of attacks on Kola, but they were repulsed. From the mid-16th century until 1804 it was a place of exile. From 1780 to 1859, Kola was the administrative center of a district.

a river in Murmansk Oblast, RSFSR. The Kola measures 83 km long and drains an area of 3,850 sq km. It flows out of Lake Kolozero, passes through Lake Pulozero, and empties into the Kola Gulf of the Barents Sea at the city of Kola. The river is fed primarily by snow; there is high water from May through July. The mean annual flow rate 8 km from the mouth is approximately 40 cu m/sec. The Kola River has many rapids; in the lower course it is used for floating timber.
