megaoesophagus

megaoesophagus

A classic late complication of Chagas’ disease, consisting of marked dilation of the oesophagus, that develops 2–20 years after infection by Trypanosoma cruzi. The change evokes dysphagia when 50% of the oesophagus’ ganglion cells are destroyed, and frank megaoesophagus when 90% are destroyed, possibly the combined result of toxic effects of the parasite and chronic inflammation and connective tissue response.

Clinical findings
Dysphagia, aspiration pneumonia, lung abscess, oesophageal carcinoma.
