Kokemäen
Kokemäen
a river in southwestern Finland. It is about 200 km long and has a basin area of 27,100 sq km, about 12 percent of which is occupied by lakes. Emptying into the Gulf of Bothnia, the Kokemäen River drains the system of lakes in the western part of the Lake Plateau. The average rate of flow is 220 eu m per sec, with the greatest discharge occurring in the spring. The river is icebound from the beginning of December to the end of April. There are rapids. The Kokemäen is used for floating timber and is navigable in places. A hydroelectric power plant is located on the river. The city of Tampere is in the Kokemäen basin, and the city of Pori is situated at the mouth.
