Kokel

Kokel’

a burial ground in the Tuva ASSR on the left bank of the Khemchik River, between the Aldy-Ishkin and Ustiu-Ishkin rivers. Discovered by S. I. Vainshtein and V. P. D’iakonova, the site was almost completely investigated in 1959–60, 1962–63, and 1965–66. It contains several hundred graves of various epochs from the sixth century B.C. to the 19th century A.D. Of particular value for the study of the ethnic history of southern Siberia and Central Asia are the large stone barrows—tribal burial grounds from Hunnish times.
