Kobdo Lakes

(Choton Nur and Chorgon Nur), fresh-water lakes in the broad intermontane depression on the northern slope of the Mongolian Altai in the Mongolian People’s Republic, at an altitude of more than 2,000 m. The Kobdo River flows through the Kobdo Lakes. Lake Choton (farther upstream) is 22 km long, about 4.5 km wide, up to 37 m deep, and 60 sq km in area. Lake Chorgon is 22 km long, up to 6.6 km wide, up to 17 m deep, and 77.5 sq km in area. The lakes are rich in fish. In winter they freeze over.
