Nerine a genus of bulbous plants of the family Amaryllidaceae. The leaves are linear and strap-shaped. The flowers are in umbels and have narrow perianthal leaflets that curve backward; they are raspberry, red, pink, or white. The fruit is a capsule and has large greenish seeds. There are about 30 species, distributed in tropical and southern Africa. Some species (N. bowdenii, N. sarniensis) and more than 300 hybrid varieties are grown in cool greenhouses as ornamentals. The plants blossom in autumn, before or during development of the leaves. |
