Medvezh’egorsk

 

a city, center of the Medvezh’egorsk Raion, Karelian ASSR. Port on Povenetskii Bay of Lake Onega. Railroad station (Medvezh’ia Gora) on the Petrozavodsk-Belomorsk line, 155 km north of Petrozavodsk, with which it is linked by highway. Population, 17,500 (1970).

Medvezh’egorsk has railroad-transport and food-industry enterprises, a sawmill, rosin-extraction and crushed-stone plants, and a logging and timber procurement establishment. The city has a climatic health resort. Summers are moderately warm (average July temperature, 16°C) and winters moderately cold (average temperature — 12°C); precipitation measures approximately 620 mm a year. Climatotherapy is available, and there is a tuberculosis sanatorium.
