Medveditsa

(mĭdvĕ`dyĭtsə), river, c.430 mi (690 km) long, SE European Russia. It rises NW of Volsk, flows roughly parallel to the Volga past Petrovsk, and empties into the Don River near Serafimovich.

The Medveditsa rises and for the most part flows through the Volga Hills in a broad valley; it is meandering, and there are many lakes in the floodplain. It is fed primarily by snow. The average discharge of water 66 km from the mouth is 69 cu m per sec; the maximum discharge is 2,070 cu m per sec and the minimum, 4 cu m per sec. The river freezes in November or December and thaws in late March or early April. Its tributaries on the right include the Balanda and Tersa and on the left, the Idolga, Karamysh, and Archeda. The cities of Petrovsk, Atkarsk, Zhirnovsk, and Mikhailovka are on the Medveditsa.
