a daily newspaper published in the Vatican. Founded in 1861, it has a circulation (1974) of 70,000 (40,000 according to some sources). The Sunday edition is called L’Osservatore Romano della Domenica. The newspaper deals with the religious life of Catholics in Italy and other countries and takes a moderate position on international issues. A semiofficial organ of the Vatican, it has several foreign editions.
