(MHSS) (mil'i-tar-rē helth sĕr'vis-ez sis'tĕm) The network of hospitals and clinics that comprise the health care system of the U.S. Department of Defense. Although its primary function is to maintain the health of members of the U.S. Armed Forces, it also provides health care if space and services are available to dependents, retirees, and other participants in TRICARE, the U.S. military health benefit plan.
