Lesistye Carpathians

 

part of the Eastern Carpathians in Poland, Czechoslovakia, and the USSR (Ukrainian SSR). They extend for 350 km from the Biala and Topl’a rivers to the Tisza (Tisa) and Cheremosh rivers. Elevation, to 2,061 m (Mount Goverla in the Chernogora massif, Ukrainian SSR). They are composed mainly of Cretaceous and Paleogene flysch and consist of a series of middle-altitude ranges (East Beskids, Gorgany, Polonina, Chernogora, Vihorlat), divided by river valleys into separate massifs. Forests of oak, beech, and spruce predominate. Subalpine and alpine meadows and shrubs are found on the highest massifs. The Carpathian Preserve (Ukrainian SSR) is located in the Lesistye Carpathians.
