Monchetundra

Monchetundra

 

a mountain massif on the Kola Peninsula, on the western shore of Lake Imandra, Murmansk Oblast, RSFSR. It extends from southeast to northwest for 30 km. Elevations range from 600 to 1,000 m, increasing toward the north-west. The massif is composed of intrusive rocks, with which deposits of copper-nickel sulfide ores are related. The peaks are covered with mountain tundra vegetation and rocky deposits. Most of Monchetundra is part of the Lapland Preserve. The city of Monchegorsk is in the foothills.
