It was incorporated into the Roman Empire in the first century bc and prospered as a frontier colony until it was overrun by Germanic peoples in the fifth century ad.

Noricum

(nŏr`ĭkəm), province of the Roman Empire. It corresponded roughly to modern Austria S of the Danube and W of Vienna. It was bordered on the west by Rhaetia and on the east by Pannonia. Noricum was incorporated into the Roman Empire in 16 B.C. It prospered for centuries, then declined and was overrun by German tribes in the 5th cent.

a Roman province rich in gold and iron, between the upper reaches of the Drava and Danube rivers. The population was made up primarily of Celts. The land was conquered by Rome and made into an imperial province in 15 B.C. During the early empire, Noricum underwent rapid romanization. In A.D. 408 it was captured by Alaric. At the end of the fifth century, Noricum was conquered by Ostrogoths and incorporated into their state.
