Norian Stage
Norian Stage
(named after the Norian Alps in Austria), the second stage from the bottom of the Upper Triassic. It was identified in 1869 by the Austrian geologist E. Mojsisovics von Mojsvar, who erroneously placed it below the Carnian Stage. The present sequence of these stages was established by the Austrian geologist A. Bittner in 1892. A typical cross section (Hallstatt, Austria) is composed of limestones containing ammonites. Norian beds are extensively developed in Eurasia, North and South America, and New Zealand.
