military aerodrome traffic zone

military aerodrome traffic zone (MATZ)

military aerodrome traffic zone (MATZ)A zone established at certain military aerodromes, where the airspace extends upward to 3000 ft above the airfield with a radius of 5 NM centered on the longest runway. The zone contains one or more “stub” projections, which are 4 NM wide, extending 5 NM along the final approach paths between 1000 and 3000 ft AGL. Although technically this is a nonregulated airspace, a pilot is strongly advised to seek permission to penetrate a MATZ. Also, the aerodrome traffic zone at the center of this airspace must be observed. Two or more MATZs may be amalgamated to produce a combined military aerodrome traffic zone (CMATZ) with a single controlling authority.
