Irritation of the skin by sheets or clothing may cause mild reddening around the papule, but the central portion remains white. As the surface of the papule wears away the trapped keratin is lost and the papule disappears spontaneously, usually shortly after birth. Similar cystic structures seen on the gums and soft palate of newborns are called Epstein's pearls; they too disappear spontaneously.
