an urban-type settlement, the administrative center of Burliu-Tobe Raion, Taldy-Kurgan Oblast, Kazakh SSR, located on the Lepsy River. A railroad station on the Semipalatinsk-Alma-Ata line. Population, 5,000 (1970). Lepsy has a plant manufacturing metal ware and a grain elevator.


Lepsy

 

(also Lepsa, Sarymsakty), a river in the Taldy-Kurgan Oblast, Kazakh SSR. Length, 417 km; basin area, 8,100 sq km. The Lepsy River originates in glaciers on the northern slope of the Dzungarian Ala-Tau and flows through the dry plains of Semirech’e (Dzhety-Su), falling into the eastern part of Lake Balkhash. It is fed by mixed sources. There are two flood seasons, spring and summer. The average water discharge 12 km from the mouth is 21.6 cu m per sec. The Lepsy freezes in November and thaws in March. It is used for irrigation.
