Oroki

Oroki

(self-designation, Ul’ta), a small nationality living mainly in the eastern part of the island of Sakhalin, Sakhalin Oblast, RSFSR.

The Orok language belongs to the southern subgroup of the Tunguso-Manchurian languages. Like the Orochi and Udegeitsy, the Oroki are sometimes mistakenly referred to as Orochony. They are probably descended from Tungus or Lamut elements that mixed with elements from the Ul’chi and Nivkhi. The Oroki work in sovkhozes as reindeer herders, and they also fish and hunt sea mammals.
