Talvi, Aino

 

(real name Aino Pindam). Born Jan. 24 (Feb. 6), 1905, in Tartu. Soviet Estonian actress. People’s Artist of the USSR (1966).

Talvi’s stage debut took place in 1929. From 1935 to 1944 she performed in the Tallinn Estonian Drama Theater, and from 1944 to 1949, in the Estonia Theater. She became a member of the V. Kingissepp Estonian Theater in 1949. Talvi’s best roles have been the Commissar in Vishnevskii’s An Optimistic Tragedy, the Widow in Smuul’s The Colonel’s Widow, Cleopatra in Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, Nora in Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, Roxane in Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac, and Courage in Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children. Her portrayals of these characters were marked by psychological depth, refined intelligence, and vivid emotionality. She has been awarded the Order of Lenin and a medal.
