Muhammad Tughlak

Muhammad Tughlak

the ruler of the Sultanate of Delhi from 1325 to 1351.

In 1326–27, Muhammad Tughlak made Deogiri (Devagiri) the capital of the sultanate, renaming the city Daulatabad. He increased taxes sharply and debased the coinage to fill the treasury. These policies severely undermined the country’s economy. Muhammad Tughlak was an educated man for his time, familiar with astronomy, philosophy, mathematics, and other branches of knowledge; he also wrote verse in Persian.
