Medieval architecture (400–1400)The architecture of the European Middle Ages where the use of Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic elements spanned a millennium. It was an age of the fortified castle, where bishop’s palaces rivaled cathedrals in splendor and served public and private functions. As the population grew, smaller houses nestled around castle walls, creating medieval towns.
