mannose-binding protein

mannose-binding protein

a protein involved in innate immunity that can bind mannosylated microorganisms and activate the complement pathway.

mannose-binding protein

A protein encoded by MASP1 on chromosome 3q27-q28, and found in the serum and liver, which mediates innate antimicrobial defence by binding to specific cell surface high mannose oligosaccharides of various bacteria, fungi and possibly also viruses (e.g., HIV), killing them by complement-mediated cell lysis or opsonisation.
