Molva

(Rumor). (1) A Russian newspaper published from 1831 to 1836 in Moscow as a literary supplement to the journal Teleskop (The Telescope). Its editor and publisher was N. I. Nadezhdin. His leading associate was V. G. Belinskii, who edited issues 24–49 for 1835. Belinskii’s article “Literary Dreams” was published in Molva (1834). The newspaper printed fiction, poetry, feuilletons, criticism, and theater reviews. It upheld realism in art. Molva was banned by the government at the same time as Teleskop.

(2) A Russian daily newspaper published in 1857 in Moscow by K. S. Aksakov (37 issues appeared). Its contributors included A. S. Khomiakov, S. T. Aksakov, P. A. Bessonov, and P. I. Bartenev. The newspaper supported Slavophilism. It was closely associated with the journal Russkaia beseda (The Russian Conversation). K. Aksakov’s article “An Essay on Synonyms: The Public and the People,” which compared the mores of the gentry with the life of the common people, displeased the authorities and resulted in the newspaper’s disbandment.
