Mugan Plain
Mugan Plain
(also Mugan Steppe), a section of the Kura-Araks Lowland, south of the confluence of the Kura and Araks rivers in Azerbaijan SSR. The southwestern part is in Iran. To the south, the plain merges gradually with the Lenkoran’ Lowland. It is an alluvial plain, lying mostly below sea level. The soils are sierozem, meadow sierozem, sierozem-brown, meadow, and sometimes saline. There is semidesert vegetation, including wormwood, saltworts, and ephemerals. The plain is irrigated by the Lenin, Moscow, Azizbekov, and other canals. Cotton is grown, and there is winter pasturing.
