Size: 1,750,000 acres.
Location:Western California between Ventura and Monterey. Accessible by US 101. Nearby cities/towns include Atascadero, Carmel, Frazier Park, King City, Monterey, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and Ventura.
Facilities:69 campgrounds (most have fewer than 10 campsites), picnic sites, trails (1,257 miles), OHV roads (459 miles), winter sports area.
Activities:Camping, fishing, boating, canoeing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, OHV riding, rock climbing, hang gliding, cross-country skiing, hunting, target shooting.
Special Features:Home to the endangered California condor. Points of interest include La Panza Range, Santa Ynez River Recreation Area, Figueroa Mountain Recreation Area, Sierra Madre Mountains, and ten wilderness areas. Forest property comprises 400 miles of year-round and seasonal streams, 37 lakes and reservoirs (in or near the forest), and many miles of coastal shoreline, including the spectacular Big Sur Coast.Forest also contains rock art created by the Chumash Indians.
