Łoś Jan

 

Born May 2(14), 1860, in Kielce; died Nov. 10, 1928, in Kraków. Polish linguist and Slavicist. Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

After graduating from the University of St. Petersburg in 1885, Łoś studied in Paris and Germany and was appointed a professor at the Jagiellonian University in Krakòow in 1902. His research dealt with Polish historical grammar and paleography, Łoś edited a dictionary of Old Polish and published Volumes 4-6 of J. Karlowicz’s dictionary of Polish dialects. He adhered to the Neogrammarian school. Łoś was a member of the academies of sciences of all the Slavic countries.
