Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute
an institute started in 1902 as the shipbuilding division of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute; in 1920 it became the shipbuilding department of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, and it has been a higher technical training institution since 1930.
The noted scientists K. P. Boklevskii, A. N. Krylov, I. G. Bubnov, V. L. Pozdiunin, P. F. Papkovich, B. M. Malinin, I. V. Meshcherskii, V. P. Vologdin, G. E. Pavlenko, V. F. Popov, and D. P. Skobov have worked at the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute. As of 1973 it consisted of departments for shipbuilding, marine power engineering, instrument building, and engineering economics, as well as evening study, correspondence study, and advanced training for instructors. It has a preparatory section, a graduate school, 45 subdepartments, and special-problems and branch laboratories. The institute has a branch on the White Sea. The library has about 550,000 books. During the 1972–73 academic year 8,300 students were being trained by about 700 instructors, including 65 professors and doctors of science and about 300 docents and candidates of science. The institute offers doctor’s and candidate’s degrees. Since 1937 it has published a journal, Trudy Leningradskogo Korablestroitel’nogo Instituta (Transactions of the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute). During its existence more than 21,000 engineers have been trained there. It was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1967.
