Leningrad Medical Institute
(full name, Academician I. P. Pavlov Leningrad Medical Institute). The institute was founded in 1897 and the name of I. P. Pavlov was bestowed upon it in 1936. Linked with the Leningrad Medical Institute are the activities and work of the academicians I. Pavlov, V. M. Bekhterev, D. K. Zabolotnyi, A. A. Zavarzin, and L. A. Orbeli and of a number of important members of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, including Iu. Iu. Dzhanelidze, G. F. Lang, M. V. Chernorutskii, P. S. Kupalov, P. A. Kupriianov, and N. N. Petrov.
The institute comprises (1973) the medical and stomatological departments, a graduate school, 47 subdepartments, a clinic, a polyclinic, and a central research laboratory. The institute offers a residency program. The library numbers about 600,000 volumes.
In the 1972–73 academic year there were 4,600 students in attendance; the teaching staff numbered more than 500, including 60 professors and doctors of sciences and about 400 docents and candidates of sciences. The institute is entitled to accept for defense doctoral and candidate’s dissertations. Collections and monographs have been published since 1930. During the years of Soviet power, the institute has trained more than 26,000 physicians. It was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1971.
