Leningrad Hydrometeorological Institute
an institute formed in 1945 from the Higher Military Hydrometeorological Institute, which had evolved from the Moscow Hydrometeorological Institute (established in 1930).
The Leningrad Hydrometeorological Institute (1973) comprises the departments of meteorology, hydrology, and oceanography and an evening department. It also has a correspondence school, a preparatory division for those wishing to enroll at the institute, a graduate school, 20 subdepartments, and a laboratory for solving important scientific problems. In the 1972–73 academic year there were approximately 3,000 students; the teaching staff numbered about 200, including 19 professors and doctors of sciences and more than 100 docents and candidates of sciences. The institute has the right to accept for defense doctoral and candidate’s dissertations. Trudy of the institute have been published since 1939. Between 1945 and 1972 the institute has trained more than 7,000 engineers.
