Nordenskjöld Archipelago

Nordenskjöld Archipelago

a group of islands in the southeastern part of the Kara Sea (USSR), stretching 93 km from west to east. The archipelago consists of 90 islands forming several groups: Vil’kitskii, Tsivol’ko, Pakhtusov, Litke, and Vos-tochnye. The northernmost of the larger islands is Russkii Island. The islands are composed chiefly of igneous rocks. They were explored in the 1930’s by the Soviet expeditions on the Sedov and Toros. The archipelago was named in honor of N. A. E. Nordenskjöld.
