Karger, Mikhail Konstantinovich

 

Born May 17 (30), 1903, in Kazan. Soviet archaeologist and art historian; specialist in Slavic and Russian archaeology and the history of ancient Russian culture and art. Doctor of Historical Sciences (1959).

Karger graduated from the University of Petrograd in 1923. In 1949 he became a professor at Leningrad University and in 1964, director of the Leningrad division of the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He directed archaeological and restoration work in Novgorod, Kiev, Pereia-slav-Khmel’nitskii, Galich, Vladimir-Volynskii, Polotsk, Turov, Iziaslavl’, and other cities. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1952 and the Order of Lenin.
