In the LIFE trial of this drug, reported on in 2003, a subgroup of diabetic patients taking the drug showed a 37 percent reduction in mortality from heart attacks or strokes and a 39 percent reduction in overall mortality over people on other treatment. The drug appears to be effective in preventing sudden death from heart arrhythmias. A brand name is Cozaar. The drug is available combined with the diuretic drug HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE under the brand name Cozaar-Comp.
