Mikhail Khergiani

Khergiani, Mikhail Vissarionovich

 

Born Mar. 20, 1935, in the village of Mestia, Georgian SSR; died July 4, 1969, in Sualto, in the Dolomites, Italy, during a climb; buried in Mestia. Soviet mountaineer. Honored Master of Sport (1963). International Class Master of Sport (1967). Honored Coach of the Georgian SSR (1967).

Between 1952 and 1968, Khergiani was several times champion of the USSR and winner of trade union competitions for mountaineering and rock climbing. He was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor. In 1971, a prize for rock-climbing champions of the USSR was established in his name.
