Mikhail Iaroslavich

 

Born 1271; died Nov. 22, 1318. Prince of Tver’ from 1285 and Grand Prince of Vladimir from 1305 to 1317.

After a long struggle, Mikhail laroslavich took the throne in 1305. He was the first Russian prince to bear the title Grand Prince of all Russia. In 1317, Khan Uzbek of the Golden Horde transferred the charter (iarlyk) of the grand prince of Vladimir to Prince lurii Danilovich of Moscow and sent Tatar troops to assist him. On Dec. 22, 1317, Mikhail laroslavich defeated Iurii in a battle at the village of Bortenevo, 40 versts (42.8 km) from Tver’. Mikhail laroslavich was compelled to stand trial before Khan Uzbek and was murdered at the khan’s headquarters by servants of Prince lurii.
