Klaus, Georg

Born Dec. 28, 1912, in Nuremberg. Marxist philosopher of the German Democratic Republic (GDR); member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin since 1961.

Klaus is a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany. He participated in the underground struggle against fascism. He became a professor at the University of Jena in 1950 and at Humboldt University (Berlin) in 1953. From 1959 to 1969 he was director of the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Klaus has worked chiefly on philosophical problems of contemporary formal logic, cybernetics, and the theory of knowledge. He was awarded the National Prize of the GDR in 1959 and 1964.
