Lorkh, Aleksandr Georgievich

Born May 15 (27), 1889, in St. Petersburg. Soviet plant breeder. Hero of Socialist Labor (1964).

Lorkh graduated from the Moscow Agricultural Institute (1913), where he served as assistant director of the breeding station from 1916 to 1920. From 1920 to 1930 he was director of the Korenevo Potato Station; from 1931 to 1941 and from 1948 to 1957, senior researcher at the Institute of Potato Growing; and from 1945 to 1947, docent and professor at the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy. He retired in 1957. He is one of the pioneers of potato breeding and strain testing in the USSR. He bred the well-known Lorkh and Korenevo potato varieties (with P. S. Gusev). He worked on cropping methods for potato varieties with due regard for soil and climatic conditions in the various parts of the country. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1946. Lorkh has also been awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition and the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy of the USSR, including three gold medals.
