Size: 1,700,000 acres.
Location:Straddles the California-Oregon border. Accessible by I-5. Nearby cities/towns include Etna, Happy Camp, and Orleans.
Facilities:36 campgrounds, dispersed camping, resorts (concession operated), picnic sites, trails (1,000+ miles), lookout towers, 5 wilderness areas.
Activities:Camping, hunting, fishing, swimming, whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, mountain climbing, spelunking, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling.
Special Features:Marble Mountains and Trinity wilderness areas; 200 miles of river system for rafting and 152 miles of wild and scenic rivers; a 116-mile segment of Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (see entry in national trails section); more than 100 glacial lakes. Forest houses the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden, ten stylized metal sculptures that honor veterans of all wars and people affected by war, both in the battle zone and at home.
