单词 | leisure society |
释义 | leisure societyleisure societythe conception of a society in which work is losing its former centrality. Since the 19th-century, various commentators have used this phrase with little precision or consistency of meaning. In the second half of the 20th-century it has been used by writers in conjunction with other terms such as POSTINDUSTRIAL SOCIETY or POSTCAPITALIST SOCIETY, suggesting that fewer average hours of paid employment leads to a greater concern for leisure in such societies. Leisure, it is argued, comes to take on the centrality that paid employment had in the past. The notion of the leisure society is highly contested, however. The basic idea that fewer hours are spent working in modern industrial society than in the past is contestable on a number of counts, and both historical and comparative evidence suggests LEISURE was a central part of life in preindustrial societies. |
