Kizel

(kēzyĕl`), city (1989 pop. 37,000), E European Russia, on the Kizel River and on the western slopes of the Urals. It is a coal-mining and industrial center with coal-concentrating factories and plants that produce mining equipment, clothing, and food products. It was founded in the late 18th cent. as a coal mining town.

Kizel

 

a city in Perm’ Oblast, RSFSR, on the western slopes of the Urals, on the Kizel River, in the Kama basin, 200 km northeast of Perm’. Railroad station; population, 46,000 (1970). Coal is mined in Kizel, the center of the Kizel coal basin. It has a plant for the repair of mining equipment, garment and furniture factories, a meat-packing plant, and a dairy. Construction materials are also manufactured. Kizel is the site of a mining technicum and a medical college. There is also a dramatic theater. Kizel, which was founded in the 18th century, became a city in 1926.
