Kivach

a preserve in Kondopoga Raion, Karelian ASSR, in the basin of the Suna River (on which the Kivach waterfall is located). The preserve was created in 1931 to protect the taiga ecosystem. Area, 10,300 hectares. Pine, spruce, and hardwood forests alternate with sphagnum bogs; linden, European alder, and Scotch elm are found on the edges of their area of distribution. The animal population is characteristic of taiga fauna (squirrel, blue hare, elk, bear, willow grouse, capercaillie, and hazel hen); there also are groups of fauna that are characteristic of more southerly regions, including the steppes (common partridge and red-legged falcon).

(from Finnish kiivas, “stormy, swift”), a waterfall on the Suna River 27 km from the river’s mouth, in the Karelian ASSR in the Kivach Forest Preserve. The water falls in cascades from several ledges from a height of approximately 11m. Some of the water is drawn off and used for a hydroelectric power plant. The waterfall is a tourist attraction.
