释义 | Lehmann, KarlLehmann, Karl(1894–1960) classical archaeologist; born in Rostock, Germany. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Berlin, then taught in Berlin and Heidelberg. During World War I he was an interpreter for the Turkish navy. In 1935 he began teaching at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. He became a U.S. citizen in 1944. Beginning in 1938 he directed the expedition to excavate the ancient Greek sanctuary at Samothrace. In 1954 he directed the building of a museum there. He wrote the definitive work on Trajan's Column (1926), a book on ancient ports, and several books on Samothrace, including Samothrace: a Guide to the Excavations and the Museum (1960). |
